MADRID Monday, February 1, 2021 | Myanmar’s military seized control of the country Monday, detaining the country’s de facto leader Aung San Suu Kyi, other democratically elected leaders and declaring a state of emergency.

The Europe Peace Foundation (EPF) strongly condemn the coup in Myanmar. This is a clear violation of the country’s constitution and an attempt by the military to overturn the will of the Myanmar people and their strong attachment to democracy, as expressed in the November 2020 general election.

The actions taken last night move in the opposite direction and do nothing to tackle the public health, security or economic issues facing the people of Myanmar.

The EPF calls for the immediate release of all those detained and the restoration of the democratic process and hope all parties involved will exercise restraint, maintain dialogue, and work towards a positive and peaceful outcome.
