The African Commission on Human and Peoples’ Rights has passed a resolution affirming the rights of intersex people.
Intersex people are individuals born with variations of sexual characteristics.
The new policy is a victory for intersex people and the LGBTQ community.
Not too long ago intersex surgeries were common in the United States
and were normalized cosmetic surgeries.
These procedures reduce the size of genitals for example which often resulted in physical and mental trauma.
These procedures have been condemned by the United Nations.
The new policy which recognizes the rights of intersex people sets in motion the potential for new laws and protections of human rights.
We at the Europe Peace Foundation believe that to maintain peace in society, the human rights of all people must be protected.
A peaceful society is a society that protects all individuals no matter their sexual orientation, preference, or characteristics.
