Pakistan floods, mass displacement and destruction
In mid-2025, Pakistan was struck by devastating floods fueled by heavy pre-monsoon rains, affecting multiple provinces (Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, Punjab, Sindh, Balochistan, and Azad Kashmir). More than 998 people died, and over one million were severely impacted, with large-scale displacement across urban and rural zones. From our peace-centered perspective, this calamity underscores how climate and environmental factors increasingly intersect with human security and rights. Infrastructure, homes, roads, and agricultural lands were swept away, aggravating preexisting vulnerabilities. The response has involved national agencies, NGOs, and rescue operations, but the scale of destruction demands sustained international solidarity.
We call on European governments and institutions to support climate-resilient recovery, flood protection, and disaster-risk reduction in Pakistan. We also frame climate justice as part of our peace agenda: when environmental shocks deepen inequality and dislocation, they sow seeds of resentment and conflict. A just response today is an investment in peace tomorrow.
