Tensions are growing on the border of North and South Korea as both countries show signs of military action.
This past August, North Korea conducted their seventh nuclear test while the United States and South Korea continued large military field exercises. The United States maintains a military presence in South Korea with nearly 29,000 troops in the case of a nuclear attack.
If the nuclear tests conducted by North Korea persist, South Korea has promised to place sanctions on North Korea which would affect the food supply in the country.
The allied countries of Japan, United States and South Korea have promised to take defensive action if North Korea does not cease their nuclear tests. Meanwhile North Korea and Russia have become closer, with North Korea reportedly planning to send laborers to help rebuild occupied territories in Ukraine.
The opposing alliances continue to grow which only heightens a threat of military conflict and potential warfare. Without a fast mitigation or peace process the world faces the threat of nuclear war.
The destructive effects of nuclear warfare are inconceivable. Billions of people would die. Global food systems and food chains would be obliterated creating unimaginable levels of starvation and food insecurity. However, if we replace our military budgets with humanitarian related ones, we could focus on prosperity.
Nuclear warfare would be an attack on human health, the environment and medical infrastructures. The long and short term effects on the human body would be without any solution in the capacity of our health care systems.
Destroyed homes would displace millions. Socioeconomic developments and social order would crumble. There would be no way to address the humanitarian devastation and emergency consequences of nuclear weapons.
Before this nightmare comes close to reality we can take action by supporting peace processes. It is possible to have a world free of nuclear weapons.
The allied countries could negotiate steps to build peace and avoid mass destruction. Supporters of peace must join together to see a world without nuclear weapons!
At the European Peace Foundation we are committed to peace processes and forming communities that take peace actions.
