MADRID Wednesday, March 3, 2021 | Myanmar security forces shot and killed at least 38 people on Wednesday, according to media reports. Videos from various locations showed security forces firing slingshots at demonstrators, chasing them down, and even beating an ambulance crew.

The Europe Peace Foundation (EPF) strongly condemn violence committed by Myanmar’s security forces against peaceful protests. We offer condolences for the loss of life. The military and the police must exercise utmost restraint and respect human rights and international law. Anyone responding to peaceful protests with violence must be held to account. Violence will not give legitimacy to the illegal over-throwing of the democratically-elected Government. The military authorities must immediately stop the use of force against civilians and allow the population to express their right to freedom of expression and assembly.

On Feb.1, Myanmar’s democratically elected State Counselor Aung Suu Kyi was ousted in a coup and has since been detained. Many of her party members have also been detained.

The EPF calls for the immediate release of all those detained and the restoration of the democratic process and hope all parties involved will exercise restraint, maintain dialogue, and work towards a positive and peaceful outcome.
